Construction for the Fairmount Hotel took place in two phases. In 1909, the first phase featured a design by the Philadelphia and New York firm of Newman and Harris. Frank Newman was the architect for the second phase in 1912. Meant to compare favorably with the luxury housing of the upper east side of New York City, this project pioneered premium residential development in Jersey City.
The Arts and Crafts style is evident in the classical revival interiors and entrances. The main entranceway is on Kennedy Boulevard with a limestone arched doorway and facade ornamented by fluted Corinthian columns topped by a cornice. On the Kennedy Boulevard side there are three, three-story bays with two on Fairmount Avenue. Brick inlay and geometric patterned mosaics decorate the bays.
At one point, Father Divine's religious organization owned the property. Senior citizen housing is the current use.
