In 1680, the Dutch settlers of Bergen erected a wooden structure to serve as the first church and school. A stone building replaced that in 1773. The present church is the third. The corner stone was laid August 26th, 1841; the dedication was July 14th, 1842. In the walls of the present church are many of the sand stone blocks of glacial boulders from the walls of the earlier church buildings. The carved stone inscription from the 1773 church is present in the east wall.
The architects were William Kirk, Clark & Van Nest of Newark and the design is of the Greek Revival style. Six Doric columns are topped by a portico from which rises a belfry with pilasters flanked by louvers. Two doorways frame six paneled doors. In the wall between the doorways are the black and white marble tablets and the embedded cornerstone. Stained glass windows contain the names of early parishioners – Sip, Newkirk, and Van Reypen. A pastoral scene by Louis C. Tiffany is a central feature.
